OB Wellness Policy

•Provide a school environment which promotes children’s health through support of healthy eating, exercise and emotional well being.
• Include all of the school community in adapting and encouraging these behaviors.
• Provide food and beverages which meet USDA nutrition guidelines, are appealing, and are sensitive to cultural and dietary needs. 
• Provide food in a pleasant setting with adequate time to eat.
• Provide meals which include a variety of fruits and vegetables, serve low or at free milk, serve grains that area least 50% whole grain, serve foods without or low in free sugars, and that are low in sodium.
• Provide adequate time to eat meals- specifically 10 minutes after sitting down for breakfast, and 20 minutes after sitting down for lunch.
• Encourage students to select new appealing food choices through taste tests and surveys.
• Share nutritional content of food with students and school community.
• Not allow meetings, clubs or other activities to interfere with mealtimes.
• Provide well balanced meals, and for items sold individually ensure that they are healthy such as, fruits, low fat milk and vegetables.
• Not sell soft drinks, sugar added drinks, sport drinks or caffeinated drinks. 
• Ensure that food sold for fundraising and other events meets nutritional and portion size guidelines.
o Examples: cookies 1 ounce, cereal bars, pastries, muffins 2 ounces, crackers chips popcorn 1 1/4 ounces
• Provide or encourage snacks that are nutritional- fruits, vegetables, water- and are timed appropriately between meals.
• Not use food as a reward or punishment.
• Provide nutritional education and promotion to all students as part of all classes. 
• This should also include use of available community services/groups, and training should be provided for teachers to incorporate this information into their coursework.
• Provide education and information for parents through newsletters and or OB school website.  This should include information about school meals, and nutrition and exercise programs at school and after school. 
• Not allow marketing of food brands anywhere on campus.
• Ensure adequate time for physical education daily, or 150 minutes per week for elementary students, and 225 minutes per week for middle school.
• Provide 20 minutes of recess per day for elementary students.
• Provide breaks for activity if a class or test is more than two hours long.
• Offer sports and physical activity programs before and after school that meet the needs, interest, and abilities of all .
• Make school facilities available to the community for physical education/activity and nutritional education programs.
