Welcome to a New and Promising School Year
The opening of school is right around the corner, and we are all excited to begin another year at the Oak Bluffs School. Our dedicated faculty and staff have been busy preparing to welcome our children and begin our work with them.
The Oak Bluffs School is filled with high achieving students and instructional staff. Our 2012 Progress Performance Index (PPI), a school’s “measuring stick” in the context of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS), demonstrated that we were performing in the 87th percentile among the over 1800 schools in the Commonwealth. We hope to see similar success regarding our 2013 results when official ratings are released later this month.
The strength of this school is in our teaching staff. For the coming year, we will continue working in our grade level teams to explore improved methods for supporting our children’s academic, social, and emotional needs. In our grade level structure, our staff has an enhanced ability to collaborate and articulate our priority standards and emphasize the consistent expectations of our school that are so necessary. This past year, we used this staffing structure to reflect on and research current practices in enhancing our school-wide math program. As a result, during this school year, we will implement the Pearson Envision math program in grades K-6. We will also continue to expand the availability for enrichment opportunities to a growing number of our students in the area of math in grades 3-8. Additionally, we teamed to explore and begin the implementation of weaving in the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports Model (PBIS) with our social curriculum for addressing our children’s social and emotional needs. We will look to increase our use of this model for the coming school year.
As with last year, all children will engage in an hour of specials per day at the same time every day. Our oldest children will have specials in the mornings while our youngest children will have their specials in the afternoons. Our older children will take part in PE, Music, Technology, Industrial Arts, Family and Consumer Sciences, Health, and Art, while our younger children will have opportunities in PE, Music, Technology, Library, and Art. Our 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders will also take Spanish as part of their day.
Throughout the year, we will be transitioning to posting our information on our school’s website and sending information directly to the email address that you have provided our office. Please update your address as necessary. It is our hope that we will reduce our use of paper, print, and postage by more frequently communicating electronically. Also, I ask that if you wish to volunteer or attend field trips, you must have a current CORI background check on file with the Superintendent of School’s office. CORI checks are valid for only three years. An expired CORI will not be acceptable if you wish to participate in school day functions. Please contact the superintendent’s office to apply for a CORI background check.
I would like to invite you to come see me any Wednesday morning at 8:30AM throughout the year. Please bring with you any questions or concerns that you may have and I will do my best to address them. Through this process and others, I hope to foster communication and a strong bond between our school and the larger community.
As the principal, I recognize the efforts that have been made on the part of our staff to support our children. I am very proud to be a member of a community that includes this high quality staff, a passionate school committee, many fine parents, and most importantly, a very hard working group of children. We have come a long way in regards to our continued collaborative efforts among our staff, students, and parents in growing a reputation for helping to foster wonderful, accomplished, high achieving students.
On behalf of the entire staff of the Oak Bluffs School, I welcome you to a new and promising school year. Please don’t forget to stop by on Wednesday mornings so that I might have the opportunity to meet you. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you and our children on the first day of school, Monday, September 9, 2013 by 8:15AM.
